Principal’s home on Grammar art tour

Auckland City Harbour News - - MILESTONES - HUGH COLLINS

Auckland Grammar School’s headmaster is giving the public a rare opportunity to step inside his home.

Tim O’Connor’s Clive Rd home will be one of 10 stops on the Auckland Grammar School Art House Tour on November 12.

The home was the residence of previous Grammar headmaster John Morris before O’Connor stepped into the role in 2012.

The tour is a first for the school and takes the place of the Grammar Art Expo of previous years.

O’Connor says the Epsom school is now expressing itself creatively in ways it once didn’t. The tour, as well as a cookbook released last year, wouldn’t have previously been part of the perception of the school.

‘‘Those sorts of things are not the traditional domain of a school like Grammar ... I think the good thing about Grammar is it’s not actually afraid to embrace new things and to progress in a variety of ways given the diversity of our school population and our parent community.’’

The tour is about putting art into real life situations, he says.

‘‘Looking at the range of artwork that’s going to be on display in the homes you know there’s something for everyone in terms of taste.

‘‘We’re going to be challenged by some of the art as well.’’

Proceeds from the tour will be allocated to the school’s Academic Endowment Fund and to the Art and Music Programmes at Grammar.

This allows the school to support teachers in a variety of ways, O’Connor says.

‘‘I think we do have an issue in terms of teacher salaries and now house prices in Auckland. For Auckland teachers to be able to have a sustainable future here is pretty tough.

‘‘It’s a little deed that we can do to support the concept of attracting and keeping good teachers.’’

O’Connor says putting his home on display was about expressing support for the concept and putting his money where his mouth is.

First sold to Auckland Grammar in the 1960s, the home was built in 1904 and was originally part of the Clifton Estate.

This included Firth’s Castle which still stands on Castle Drive today.

The Auckland Grammar School Art House Tour kicks off at 10am on November 12.
