World record for Movember
An Auckland barber is believed to have achieved a Guinness World Record by performing hundreds of free haircuts.
Barber Brendan Blake, who prefers to be called Bundy, and his team of nine barbers cut 396 heads of hair between 8.30am and 4.30pm at Auckland’s Britomart Country Club on November 18, beating the current record of 375 haircuts in eight hours.
The record attempt was designed to raise awareness for Movember - a month-long men’s health campaign held annually in November.
Bundy opened his first barbershop, Boar and Blade in 2012 on Egmont St in Wellington with limited finances.
Soon after opening he was diagnosed with testicular cancer.
‘‘When hear you have the c word, it hits you like you’ve just been in a car accident,’’ Bundy says.
‘‘I trucked on through, I got diagnosed on the Monday and I was in emergency surgery on the Friday.
‘‘I had to go back to work and clients would send me home because I was in so much pain but it kept my business alive.’’
Bundy says he was shocked when the doctor showed him his scans.
‘‘The whole testicle had a big tumour in it and was full-blown cancer.’’
He has been a supporter of Movember for years and knows the importance of checking on your friends.
‘‘Go in once a year and get a check up, talk with your mates about it and check in on them too.’’
Movember country manager Robert Dunne said he couldn’t be happier with the result.
‘‘A lot of positive talk has been generated through Bundy about why he was doing this challenge and we were proud to support the team yesterday in their attempt’’ Dunne says.
While official word on the world record is yet to be confirmed by the Guinness Book of World Records, Bundy said he could not be prouder of his team’s efforts last Friday.
‘‘We knew it was going to be tough, but this wasn’t something we’ve done before so couldn’t really know just how hard it was going to be.
‘‘But as the hours passed, the guys just focused, dug deep and got the job done – they’re all a real credit to the Boar and Blade family,’’ Bundy says.
