The 157-year old category 1 historic Melanesian Mission building in Mission Bay will be shrouded in plastic wrap as it undergoes seismic strengthening. Heritage New Zealand’s Nick Chin said in the next phase of work the shingle roof of the Melanesian Mission building will be removed, and the rafters and purlins of the original mission building secured to a structural plywood base installed in the roof space. The plastic covering is expected to remain in place until early May. The Melanesian Mission building and cafe is currently closed to the public with the revamped facility expected to re-open in October.
