RECYCLE MATTRESSES

Auckland City Harbour News - - YOUR PAPER, YOUR PLACE -

Every year 300,000 mattresses are sent to landfill, costing sites $14.5 million, but old mattresses can now be recycled through a new programme. Auckland Council has helped fund the establishment of an innovative mattress recycle scheme through its Waste Minimisation Innovation Fund. The 3R Group is launching Rebound, a programme encouraging mattress manufacturers and retailers to take responsibility for the disposal of their products. Both consumers and businesses will be able to drop off old mattresses at Auckland Council resource recovery centres and transfer stations free of charge. Businesses can also arrange direct delivery to a local processing centre. The mattresses will be dismantled into rawmaterials, such as steel, foam, plastic and fabric which are either recycled or reused. To find out more about the programme visit rebound.org.nz.
