Air NZ hints direct flight to New York
The Big Apple could be just one flight away from Auckland.
Air New Zealand chief executive Christopher Luxon hinted at direct flights between Auckland and New York, Forbes reported.
Luxon envisioned flying to US hotspots like New York and Chicago once the airline had the right planes, the article said.
‘‘We are one of the top five airlines in the world in terms of distance,’’ Luxon said.
‘‘We end up flying a normal [international] flight 12 or 13 hours.’’
Two of the longest flights in the world, direct to Dubai and Doha, both serve from Auckland.
Qatar Airways currently hosted the 17-and-a-half hour Doha-Auckland flight, which covered 14,535km.
A direct flight from Auckland to New York would cover 14,815km, which would make it the longest flight in the world.
Air New Zealand began the Auckland to Houston line in December 2015 - a distance of 11,910km.
However, an Air New Zealand spokeswoman said the airline did not have any route announcements to make at this time.
‘‘Air New Zealand is constantly assessing its route network,’’ she said.
‘‘However we don’t have any route announcements to make at present.’’
