Plum beauty

TO TOP OFF A MODERN BOHO LOOK, SWITCH YOUR PALE PASTEL NAIL SHADES TO DEEP, DARK AND INTENSE COLOURS. Short rounded nails and soft oval shapes make dark shades so much more wearable. “They are less likely to chip and are easier to maintain,” advises Cheryl Cook, OPI Nail Artist.

When applying the colour,

hold the brush flat to the nail to get better coverage. “Slow gentle brush strokes will improve the chances for a tidy manicure, and you’ll have more control when applying,” says Cheryl.

If you slip and get nail polish on the skin,

Cheryl suggests using a small brush or disposable eyeshadow applicator dipped in polish remover to clean up without spoiling freshly painted nails. Make sure your nails are completely dry before you apply each coat.

When it’s time to take the polish off,

Cheryl’s top tip is to use a nail wipe saturated with nail polish remover and hold it on the nail for about 10 seconds before wiping.

“The polish will come away more cleanly, with less staining of the skin around the nails. Use a fresh wipe each time.” TRY: 1. O.P.I Nail Lacquer in What’s the Hatter with You, $20. 2. Ruby nail polish in Vampire, $19.

Luscious lips

Preparation is key for this long-lasting dramatic look on lips, advises M.A.C Senior Artist Kiekie Stanners. “Ensure lips are hydrated with a lip conditioner before starting.” She suggests using a long-wearing lip pencil as a base to line, fill and cover the lips completely. “A pencil will help shape your lips and prevent dark lipstick smudging.” Next, apply your lip shade over the top with a lip brush, stopping just within the pencilled lip line. TRY: 1. Bobbi Brown Lip Colour in Berry, $54. 2. M.A.C Lipstick in Stylist’s Tip, $40. 3. Karen Murrell lipstick in Scarletblaze, $30.

The current

‘feline flick’ is the ideal complement to dark lips. First, softly define the eyes with a neutral brown shadow up to the natural crease. Then, Kiekie Stanners suggests, use a liquid liner to create a feline flick. “Start in the inner corner of the eye and drag the liner out, creating a heavier line on the outer corners.”

To create a full, strong brow, use a brow pencil or slightly darker eyeshadow. “You can also help set brows by using a tinted brow brush,” adds Kiekie. TRY: 1. Elizabeth Arden Precision Glide Eyeliner in Slate, $46. 2. Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner in Black Ink, $52. 3. M.A.C Big Brow Pencil in Spiked, $40.
