The size of the av­er­age din­ner plate has in­creased by one third in the past 50 years, and New Zealan­ders might have fallen into the trap of pil­ing on more food than nec­es­sary.

The Bri­tish Heart Foundation has come up with some handy guide­lines for cor­rect por­tion sizes. Serv­ings men­tioned in­clude red meat, which should be the size of a deck of cards, while oily fish should be lim­ited to the size of a mo­bile phone. A serv­ing of chicken should be no larger than a bar of soap, and your favourite sweet treat, choco­late, should be no big­ger than a tube of

lip­stick.
