More than half of New Zealand doc­tors and den­tists em­ployed in our pub­lic hos­pi­tals are tired and ex­hausted on the job, ac­cord­ing to a new study by the As­so­ci­a­tion of Salaried Med­i­cal Spe­cial­ists. It has re­vealed the coun­try’s top med­i­cal pro­fes­sion­als are bat­tling high lev­els of burnout due to in­tense and un­re­lent­ing work­loads, un­der-staffing, oner­ous on-call du­ties and frus­tra­tions with man­age­ment. As a re­sult of the study, the as­so­ci­a­tion is ap­proach­ing District Health Boards to dis­cuss the is­sue and in­ves­ti­gate so­lu­tions.
