Sow salad seeds direct. You’ll have more success than if you sow seed in trays, as they dry out too quickly in the heat of summer. • Sow parsnips, swedes and Brussels sprouts for winter. Protect these and other brassicas from white cabbage butterfly caterpillars. • It’s not too late to pot up chillies, as you can move the containers under cover come autumn. • Transplant punnets of lettuces, basil, parsley and perpetual spinach.
