Cut, don’t pull, ripe cit­rus. Man­darins, or­anges, le­mons and limes last much longer in your fruit bowl if the tip of the stem is still at­tached to the fruit.

• Dig Jerusalem ar­ti­chokes for soups and roasts. As these tu­bers don’t keep well once out of the soil, only dig what you need for a meal.

• Wait un­til after the first frosts to har­vest yams, swedes and parsnips. Their starchy roots taste sweeter after a cold snap.
