Do pro­cessed foods af­fect men­tal health? The de­creas­ing nu­tri­tional value of our food may be con­tribut­ing to an “epi­demic” of men­tal ill­ness, ac­cord­ing to Can­ter­bury Univer­sity psy­chol­o­gist Ju­lia Ruck­lidge, with one in eight NZ adults now on an­tide­pres­sants. She says eat­ing more fresh foods, as in a Mediter­ranean diet, and less pro­cessed foods, could re­verse spi­ralling rates of con­di­tions such as ADHD, anx­i­ety and de­pres­sion.
