Box of memories I just loved reading Lynda Hallinan’s article, Hope and Glory (April 2017). It reminded me of my glory box and the kilometres it has travelled as it followed me around the world, taking on a variety of roles. My nana gave it to me for my 21st birthday in 1982 – a green padded box with a sliding drawer. My 21st was a traditional party, where family and friends gave me items that quickly filled the box – all ready for the leap into adulthood with my first teaching job away from home. Many years later the box was packed with wedding gifts and shipped first to the UK, then on to Cyprus where we lived, and later to New Zealand, where it was transformed into a toy box for my son. It has moved several times within NZ until our last stop, Wanaka. It now holds my son’s childhood memories, things I can’t bear to part with, things that at his stage in life he is not interested in, but one day I am sure the glory box will be reinvented into a useful item in his home.
