App approach to alcohol
A new project has been launched to develop a smartphone app for Kiwi problem drinkers in order to help them self-manage hazardous drinking. The app will be rooted in psychological theory and was sparked after research showed that 20 per cent of deaths among 15- to 35-year-olds can be attributed to alcohol, mostly from road accidents. It is intended to provide coping strategies, identify key causes of drinking and give weekly feedback on progress. The Health Research Council has awarded $187,000 of public money to kick-start the app.
