App ap­proach to al­co­hol

A new project has been launched to de­velop a smart­phone app for Kiwi prob­lem drinkers in or­der to help them self-man­age haz­ardous drink­ing. The app will be rooted in psy­cho­log­i­cal the­ory and was sparked af­ter re­search showed that 20 per cent of deaths among 15- to 35-year-olds can be at­trib­uted to al­co­hol, mostly from road ac­ci­dents. It is in­tended to pro­vide cop­ing strate­gies, iden­tify key causes of drink­ing and give weekly feed­back on progress. The Health Re­search Coun­cil has awarded $187,000 of pub­lic money to kick-start the app.
