Nicole shines at Cannes

Australian Women’s Weekly NZ - - NEWS -

Nicole Kidman glowed on the Cannes Film Festival red carpet in a parade of divine outfits, stepping out in silver Rodarte, glittering Chanel and elegant Alexander McQueen among other designers, to promote four projects she had in competition. As impressive as her sartorial choices were, it was her fierce support for women in the film industry that deserves praise. Nicole (right, with husband Keith Urban) used the spotlight to announce she would work with a female director every 18 months. “We as women have to support female directors,” Nicole said. “Hopefully, it will change over time, but everybody keeps saying, ‘Oh, it’s so different now, oh, it’s so different now,’ and it isn’t.” Nicole, who has just turned 50, stars in The Beguiled, which earned Sofia Coppola the Best Director award. Sofia is only the second woman to receive this honour in the festival’s 71-year history, underscoring Nicole’s point.
