More than a freedom fighter

Australian Women’s Weekly NZ - - YOUR LETTERS - ISABEL ASHMORE

There are so many good stories about the wonderful women in this country and from afar that make me feel in awe of how they have coped with hardship, while retaining their passion to make the world a fairer place for women and girls. However, the life story of Manal al-Sharif must be the most heartbreaking I have read. I had previously learned of her part in trying to bring a better sort of freedom to the women and girls of Saudi Arabia, but the content of her life and tragedies as related in your July issue has left me knowing without a doubt that we women in New Zealand are so fortunate. The freedoms we take for granted are denied to so many women worldwide, and Manal has been brave enough to pursue her dream of a better life for the women of Saudi. Sheis much more than a mother, wife and freedom fighter. Manal al-Sharif is a legend and an inspiration in courage and perseverance. I am humbled.
