While sriracha and av­o­cado smash were the big food trends of 2016, harissa chilli paste seems set to be the hit of 2017, al­ready se­cur­ing favour with celebrity chefs Jamie Oliver and Yo­tam Ot­tolenghi. Strong and nutty, with a pow­er­ful earth­i­ness be­hind the heat, harissa has more com­plex­ity than other hot sauces. Add it to cous­cous or seafood pasta, mix with may­on­naise for a su­per-quick sauce, use it to mar­i­nate chicken, or mix with olive oil as a dip for breads.
