When it comes to sniffing out fantastic second-hand and recycled finds, Martine is a pro. Here is her advice on how to get started.

1 The adage, “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure,” really applies. Work out what level of disrepair you can realistically deal with – broken furniture you will never get around to fixing is just junk. 2 Take advantage of places that specialise in “reverse” garbage and recycled items. Scour garage sales and join buy, sell and swap groups on the internet. 3 Be bold – if you don’t grab it, someone else will. And if you have somewhere to store it, you can hold on to it while you figure out what to do with it.
