In 2014, Australian writer Richard Flanagan won the Man Booker prize for The Narrow Road to the Deep North. He was born in a tiny mining town in Tasmania, the fifth of six children. His mother died weeks after he won the prize. “Winning the Booker was a catastrophe of good fortune and I’m grateful for it, but it’s not the same thing as losing your mum,” he tells The Australian Women’s Weekly. He now lives in Hobart with his wife, Majda, and their three daughters
