Skate to mass

If you’re going to be in Venezuela over Christmas, pack your roller skates. In Caracas, neighbourhoods close their streets to traffic until 8am from December 16 to 24, so families can roller skate to early morning mass. Before bed, children tie a piece of string to their big toe and hang the other end out the window. If they’re not woken by the fireworks and ringing bells calling worshippers to mass before dawn, skaters tugging on the string surely will.
