Most plants do 80 per cent of their growing in spring, so feed and water to make the most of the growth spurt. Prune hybrid tea roses. Cut them back by a third, place the prunings 30cm deep in pots of sand, keep them moist in semi-shade and by Christmas you will have new bushes for gifts. Harvest the season’s first tender asparagus, tiny globe artichokes, new shoots of spinach, snow peas, baby peas and all those other homegrown luxuries.
