Diabetic aid in NZ
DESMOND, an acronym for Diabetes Education Self Management for Ongoing and Newly Diagnosed, is arriving in New Zealand.
The programme has a dedicated quality development and training team to support Healthcare professionals.
Working with GPs, nurses and other referrers is an integral part of the DESMOND programme pathway.
The person with diabetes is providedwith the opportunity to set their own diabetes management goals which the GP/nurse/referrer can in turn support them to achieve. DESMONDWestern Australia has trained more than 130 educators in Australia and New Zealand. Evaluation results in Australia have shown: • Asignificant decrease in systolic blood pressure • Asignificant decrease in diabetes distress • Downward trends inHbA1c and cholesterol • Increase in physical activity • Asignificant increase in the perceived impact of diabetes
