DES­MOND, an acro­nym for Di­a­betes Ed­u­ca­tion Self Man­age­ment for On­go­ing and Newly Di­ag­nosed, is ar­riv­ing in New Zealand.

The pro­gramme has a ded­i­cated qual­ity de­vel­op­ment and train­ing team to support Health­care pro­fes­sion­als.

Work­ing with GPs, nurses and other re­fer­rers is an in­te­gral part of the DES­MOND pro­gramme path­way.

The per­son with di­a­betes is pro­vid­ed­with the op­por­tu­nity to set their own di­a­betes man­age­ment goals which the GP/nurse/re­fer­rer can in turn support them to achieve. DESMONDWestern Australia has trained more than 130 ed­u­ca­tors in Australia and New Zealand. Eval­u­a­tion re­sults in Australia have shown: • Asig­nif­i­cant de­crease in sys­tolic blood pres­sure • Asig­nif­i­cant de­crease in di­a­betes distress • Down­ward trends in­HbA1c and choles­terol • In­crease in phys­i­cal ac­tiv­ity • Asig­nif­i­cant in­crease in the per­ceived im­pact of di­a­betes
