Celebrities join in event
Tauranga’s very own internationalmarathon is this weekend and participantsmight notice some familiar faces puffing along beside them.
This year’s ambassadors and celebrity entrants are Mike McRoberts (full marathon), Viarni Bright (12km), Tiki Taane (6km, reduced length due to training injury) Art Green (half marathon), Matilda Rice (6km), Tauranga City councillors Kelvin Clout and Max Mason are both doing the half marathon.
Organised by Total Sport, last year’s event saw more than 1200 runners taking part in 42.2km, 21.1km, 12km and 6km options, as well as a 2km kids’ (and parents) dash.
The event is from Papamoa to The Strand.
The full marathon starts in Papamoa, towards Mount Maunganui and around Mauao, Pilot Bay, over the harbour bridge, Fergusson Park and back, Waikareao Estuary including the Daisy Hardwick boardwalk before finishing in the city centre, where runners will be awarded their medal at the party.
There’s also going to be a big party atmosphere at The Strand when everyone comes in.
Prizes for the full marathon (men and women) include $2000, second placegetters $1000 and third place $500. There are also cash prizes for the half marathon.
Tauranga International Marathon takes place this coming Saturday, September 22.
