Celebri­ties join in event

Tau­ranga’s very own in­ter­na­tional­marathon is this week­end and par­tic­i­pantsmight no­tice some fa­mil­iar faces puff­ing along be­side them.

This year’s am­bas­sadors and celebrity en­trants are Mike McRoberts (full marathon), Viarni Bright (12km), Tiki Taane (6km, re­duced length due to train­ing in­jury) Art Green (half marathon), Matilda Rice (6km), Tau­ranga City coun­cil­lors Kelvin Clout and Max Ma­son are both do­ing the half marathon.

Or­gan­ised by To­tal Sport, last year’s event saw more than 1200 run­ners tak­ing part in 42.2km, 21.1km, 12km and 6km op­tions, as well as a 2km kids’ (and par­ents) dash.

The event is from Pa­pamoa to The Strand.

The full marathon starts in Pa­pamoa, to­wards Mount Maun­ganui and around Mauao, Pi­lot Bay, over the har­bour bridge, Fer­gus­son Park and back, Waikareao Es­tu­ary in­clud­ing the Daisy Hard­wick board­walk be­fore fin­ish­ing in the city cen­tre, where run­ners will be awarded their medal at the party.

There’s also go­ing to be a big party at­mos­phere at The Strand when ev­ery­one comes in.

Prizes for the full marathon (men and women) in­clude $2000, sec­ond placeget­ters $1000 and third place $500. There are also cash prizes for the half marathon.

Tau­ranga In­ter­na­tional Marathon takes place this com­ing Satur­day, Septem­ber 22.
