Tauranga scores sevens event
Tauranga is gearing up to host the TECT National Sevens tournament at Tauranga Domain in December.
Bay of Plenty Rugby Union Strategic Partnerships and
Special Projects manager David Pearce says 28 teams will take part and it’s really exciting for the city.
For the last five years the game had been held in Rotorua but when the union retendered for the event it suggested Tauranga as the new location.
“We wanted to freshen up the tournament and try a different city and another timeframe.
“Rotorua always had it in mid January which has been a real challenge to get people off the beach and off their camping holidays to watch some rugby.
“But we think we have an absolutely ideal weekend in mid December to get the crowds.”
The national tournament had attracted 28 teams, including 16 men’s teams and 12 women’s team that would play 78 games over two days.
The Tauranga Domain was a great facility, Pearce says, and support from TECT, the community and the council had been fantastic.
“People can come along and enjoy the festival of rugby.”
“It’s a very family friendly event. Wewill have lots of activities for kids and good food and beverage options.
“Hopefully we’ll also get some lovely weather.”
