Kate Sylvester studied fashion at Massey University and was inducted into the Massey University Hall of Fame in 2008 before the bestowment of an honary doctorate from the university in 2011. Now, to further cement ties between the revered NZ designer and the institution is the establishment of the Kate Sylvester Award for Design excellence, an annual graduate award to highlight the school’s design and creativity and cement Kate's ongoing involvement with the school. Lucilla Gray is the inaugural winner of the award, the centrepiece of which is an 8 week design internship at the Kate Sylvester workroom from January through until March. During that time the award winner gets the chance to design an outfit for the Kate Sylvester Spring Summer collection, a highly prestigious and far reaching prize. Lucilla's brief was to develop a story that tied into the Kate Sylvester SS14 concept ’West Coast’ and we think she has cleverly captured the ruggedness of the coast with a tough yet feminine vibe, captured here by the inimitable photographic duo of Karen Inderbitzen-waller and Delphine Avril Planqueel.
