Kiwi pride at AOWBS 2017

The Auckland On Water Boat Show is the perfect place for New Zealand boatbuilders to showcase their work.

As always, there will also be a number of fine historic and classic New Zealand yachts on display.

This year, Scott Lane Boatbuilders will be showing Zagato, a New Zealand-designed and built Elite 13m Sport Sedan. Described by the builders as “a very cool little boat,” it is the fifth Elite of this design to leave Scott Lane’s yard; a sixth is currently under construction.

Zagato was reviewed in the February 2017 issue of Boating New Zealand, https://boatingnz.co.nz/boat-reviews/upfoldelite-13-5m-sports-sedan/

Another Elite on show this year is Antiquity, an 18m Elite mid-pilothouse custom-built by Lloyd Stevenson Boatbuilders to its usual high standard and launched in 2015. Unique to Antiquity is a large al fresco dinette. She is possibly the highestspec 18m to date, says designer Bill Upfold.

Staying with the Elite theme, Allan Tongs Boat Builders will show Mazara, a stunning Elite 12m Sports Sedan. Allan’s personal boat, Mazara will be exhibited with a view to building the design as a moulded production boat. All three boats will be displayed alongside one another. Constructed in glass over plywood with foam-core decks and superstructure, Auckland builder Marine Evolutions will exhibit an impressive looking Don Senior 17.2m enclosed hardtop sport fisher/cruiser. Powered by a pair of C9 Caterpillars, the sleek 4.9m beam vessel features an open transom and a stylish, modern interior.

Highly-respected multi-hull specialist Roger Hill will have at least one of his designs represented at the show and possibly more depending on build progress. Alloy Cats will display a new Roger Hill 12 displacement power catamaran, the third of this design but the first built in aluminium. Alloy Cats has two larger versions in build in Tauranga.

Powered by a pair of 250hp Hyundai diesels this boat is finished with a high quality interior for an Auckland owner and will mostly be used in the Hauraki Gulf.

Other notable vessels from New Zealand builders include the expedition yacht Archimedes, a 63-foot custom-built gaff-rigged cutter in steel with wooden masts and lots of brightwork.

Designed by Jay Benford to round Cape Horn and able to survive a 360° roll-over, Archimedes is superbly finished. She was launched in 2003 by Johnson Yachts International, sister company to Epic Yachts at Pine Harbour, who look after her on behalf of her owners and will display the vessel at the show.

As always, there will also be a number of fine historic and classic New Zealand yachts on display.

A very different yacht is the innovative Farrier F22 trimaran, a new-build which has outer hulls that fold against the main hull so the yacht can be trailered. The Farrier is reviewed elsewhere in this issue.

In addition, there will be plenty of Kiwi-built maxi trailer boats on show this year, including aluminium sport fishers from White Pointer, Makaira Boats and Everyman; GRP examples from Tristram Marine and Rayglass; and RIBS from Smuggler Marine.

Visitors to the show can also view examples of New Zealand’s most popular locally built aluminium and fibreglass trailer boats in a range of sizes and models, as well as RIBS, dinghies, inflatables and tenders. BNZ
