There have been more than 2,300 ship­wrecks around the New Zealand coast since the first recorded wreck in 1795. New Zealand’s long, rocky coast­line, windy and change­able weather, and har­bours with sand­bars have made safe nav­i­ga­tion dif­fi­cult, more so in the days be­fore re­li­able nav­i­ga­tion aids and marine elec­tron­ics.
