You’ve got to take your hat off to Kiwi adventurer Scott Donaldson who, in June, after 62 days at sea, finally accomplished his goal of becoming the first person to kayak 2,200km from Australia to New Zealand solo. This was Donaldson’s third attempt at the crossing. The first, in 2013, was abandoned when his satellite phone died. A year later he aborted his second attempt only 80km from his destination – the vessel’s rudder broke.
Never give up, if at first you don’t succeed, dig deep – they all sound limp and meaningless by way of accolades – and most readers’ exclamations probably can’t be printed in this polite, family-friendly journal. So, bloody well done, old chap. Donaldson set off from Coffs Harbour, Australia, on May 2, and arrived on a New Plymouth Beach two months later.
