Life­sav­ing or­gan­i­sa­tions be­gan in the late 19th cen­tury with boat own­ers ser­vic­ing their lo­cal ar­eas. The need for one life­sav­ing or­gan­i­sa­tion re­sulted in the re­gional units band­ing to­gether in 1976 and form­ing the New Zealand Coast­guard. Now there are 63 units through­out the coun­try, manned by 2,052 vol­un­teers and em­ploy­ing 78 ves­sels and two aero­planes.
