Bush Telegraph - - Focus On Dannevirke - By DAVE MURDOCH

After a 7-7 draw against Waipawa in a pre-season game last week Dannevirke Sports Club’s senior rugby side began the Manawatu Premiere Two competition with an emphatic win 42-10 over Freyberg.

In an open game the Dannevirke forwards provided a feast of ball and combined with the backs to put on a rugby spectacle before an excited crowd. After the game the referee commended both teams for their excellent attitude and good clean game.

This year the Dannevirke pack has a lot of tall timber to combine with aggressive loosies and they combined well to put Freyberg under a lot of pressure.

Having good front-foot ball, the backs had too much firepower and pace, running in four tries to winger Sam Jones (2), Logan Massie and Mitch Nation in the first half to take a 22-5 lead at halftime. A re-arranged Dannevirke pack took a little time to settle early in the second half and Freyberg scored a deserved forward try before momentum swung back and the local side scored three more tries to Sean Cordell, Vaughan Wrenn and Trent Ransom to win 42-10.

Assistant Coach Nigel Castles said he was very pleased with the first game for the season.
