On Saturday March 17 the Manawatu Rugby competition kicked off with Bush entering two teams in the competition, fielding a Senior 2nds and Senior 3rds side.

The Senior 2nds had a tough game first up, taking on last year’s fifth place getters Massey Rams. The Rams have dominated the competition for some time with a constant intake of new players each year giving them plenty to choose from.

It was a fast pace from the outset with the fitness of the Massey side showing up early with Bush sucking in some big ones. What the Rams didn’t have was a solid forward pack with the Bush scrum stealing several tight heads. Local Wiremu Wolland, in his first game for Bush, showed his talents playing a full 80 minutes dominating all day. Player of the day was Cam Smith who had a blinder at number 8. Cam was all over the park and created a real difference. It wasn’t all one way traffic, with the Massey backs pulling off some classy tries. Final score Bush 44 Massey Rams 31.

The Senior 3rds took on Feilding Yellows in what they knew was going to be a tough game. The Yellows have stuck together from when they were playing Senior As. Under new coach Hayden Doidge, they have a new mindset this year and turn up to training. The first half was a battle with the boys muscling it up against some old heads, going into the break with Feilding ahead, 7-5.

In the second half fatigue set in and the Yellows held their composure to run away with it. Players to shine for Bush were Sam O’Neil and Josh Roberts, player of the day at full back.

Final Score Bush 5 Feilding 50.
