Junior hockey more than a hit in Dannevirke

Bush Telegraph - - Focus On Dannevirke - By DAVE MURDOCH

A fine crisp Friday night May 4 and huge numbers of children wearing hockey gear were down at the Sports Stadium in Dannevirke playing on the artificial surface.

In a change from last year there were more hockey players on the new hockey turf at Dannevirke High School, the seniors (Kwik Sticks) revelling in the open space.

Altogether 233 children are registered in four grades with approximately six teams in each. Fun Sticks are year 1-2, who now play outside. Mini-sticks are year 3-4 and kiwi-sticks are year 5-6.

Organisers are hoping for great weather for the 10-week season. They focus on participation and enjoyment although there is plenty of rivalry between school-based teams. No goal can be scored without passing twice and teams are five-aside to give every player a chance to play.
