Ross Shield Team the best in years

The 2018 Dannevirke Ross Shield team has done Dannevirke proud, Quinney Olsen, Dannevirke JAB chairman says.

“This was a great effort, the best for a long time,” he said. “We certainly rattled the city teams’ cages — they didn’t expect that. The coaching was excellent. Simon Prouting, Aaron Satchwell, Matt Augustine and manager Fiona Prouting did so well.”

With outstanding performances at last week’s tournament in Waipukurau, Dannevirke won the Life Member’s Salver, winning over country clubs Waipukurau 38-5 and Wairoa, 80-5. But they also did well against city teams, going down narrowly to Hastings East 7-10 and Hastings West, 10-12. The score against Napier 8-31 didn’t reflect the way Dannevirke played, with Napier head coach Tyrone Thompson quick to heap kudos on Dannevirke.

“Dannevirke took to us in the first 15 minutes and outplayed us at the rucks,” he said. “We absorbed a lot of pressure but came back well in the second half. It never felt like we were ahead of them. It’s the best Dannevirke side I’ve seen for a long time.” Rico Phillips, Josh Augustine and Manaia Hauiti were selected for the team.

Longtime supporter of the Ross Shield Bill Webster who has attended nearly every tournament over 30 years and travelled to Waipukurau every day echoes the sentiment, saying the team matched those which won the tournament in 1982 and 1987.

There were talented and wellbuilt players but they were also well coached by coaches Simon Prouting, Allan Satchwell and Matt Augustine.

“The team was unlucky,” he said. “Had the narrow losses gone the other way the team would have seriously challenged for the shield.”
