Ath­letes reap suc­cess

The girls of Mt Roskill Gram­mar tasted suc­cess last week at the New Zealand sec­ondary schools ath­let­ics cham­pi­onships in Wan­ganui.

The school picked up three golds, two sil­vers and seven bronzes, with the se­nior girls re­lay team prov­ing the stars of the show.

Por­tia Woodman, An­drea Koe­nen, Jenna Erkkila and Rachel Peeters were out­stand­ing in the se­nior girls 4x100m, tak­ing out the New Zealand ti­tle.

They were 10 me­tres clear of all other teams in the fi­nal, go­ing un­der 50 sec­onds twice in the process.

The girls also col­lected a bronze medal in the se­nior girls 4x400m re­lay, cap­ping off a great week­end for the team.

Koe­nen also high­lighted her in­di­vid­ual prom­ise, win­ning the se­nior girls 200m, com­ing sec­ond in the 100m and third in the high­jump.

TeRina Keenan threw 47.16m in the se­nior girls dis­cus, pick­ing up the cham­pion’s ti­tle for the sec­ond year in a row, while re­ceiv­ing a bronze in the shot put.

Al­bert Nikoro was the big­gest suc­cess story for the boys with a sil­ver in the ju­nior boys shot put and a bronze in the ju­nior boys dis­cus.
