International opera stars will take the stage at St Patrick’s Cathedral starting tonight to help fund the remaining cost of the church’s restoration.

Two concerts will feature Angela M Brown and New Zealander Simon O’Neill, with supporting artists Kate Spense, Morag Atchison, Claire Filer, James Ioela and Cameron Barclay.

The Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra will be conducted by Hamish McKeitch and their programme will cover requiems, cantatas, motets and masses with selections from Handel, Haydn and Verdi as well as more modern music.

Proceeds from the event will be used to help offset the remaining $1.8 million debt for the cathedral restoration.

“These concerts offer a wonderful opportunity to celebrate an outstanding restoration of what is an important part of Auckland’s heritage and architecture,” says Auckland mayor John Banks.

Concerts will begin at 7.30pm tonight, tomorrow and Friday.

Tickets range from $60 to $175.

For bookings contact the cathedral on 303-4509.
