Dope plants found in fire callout

Central Leader - - News -

Firefighters got more than they bargained for while investigating a small house fire.

A crew was called to a Greenlane property about 7am on Wednesday where a fire had started in a rumpus room at the back of the house.

When they arrived, the fire had been put out by the occupant but while ventilating the house firefighters discovered between 30 and 40 cannabis plants.

The police were called and are speaking to a man about the incident.

Ellerslie fire station officer Ian Richards says the fire was caused by something combustible getting too close to the room’s heating system.

The occupants were lucky they woke up and found the fire before it spread.

The house had no smoke alarms so lives could have been lost, he says.
