Filmmakers set to score at concert
Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra’s Night at the Movies concert is returning bigger and better than before and includes an innovative new competition.
Return of a Night at the Movies, held at the Aotea Centre, will again be an opportunity to hear iconic film scores played live by a full orchestra.
This year the event incorporates the Cut To: Music competition, inviting new filmmakers to create a short film to fit a prepared orchestral score.
The winner will have their film screened at Return of a Night at the Movies on June 14, with the score performed by the Auckland Philhar- monia Orchestra.
Orchestra chief executive Barbara Glaser says the competition provides a unique challenge for directors who are used to fitting the score to images.
“We encourage film directors from around the country to open their ears to music, and be led by what they hear,” she says.
The concert will also feature pieces from film favourites such as Laurence of Arabia, Star Wars, Lion King and Pirates of the Caribbean.
Tickets to Return of a Night at the Movies are available from Ticketek.
