A well-known member of the Lynfield community is about to get a much needed facelift.

The 18-year-old Lynfield Recreation Centre, leased by the YMCA, is getting a $1.4 million revamp from Auckland City Council.

“It’s fantastic to see the community getting an enhanced centre,” says centre manager Nick Mannix.

“From the YMCA’s point of view, it’s good to be in a strong partnership with the council and community.”

The entrance will be made more accessible for people with disabilities and the fitness centre will double in size.

A new youth room will be built with a kitchen, table tennis facilities and comfortable chairs.

“It’s part of the council’s initiative to get community centres better placement in the community and hopefully enhance their use,” says Mr Mannix.

The YMCA has spent $100,000 on new fitness equipment to use after the centre is finished.

The interior will be updated and renovations are expected to be finished by December.

A council spokeswoman says the redevelopment will enable the centre to meet increased capacity as the community grows.
