Church has its back to the wall

A lack of funding has left a heritage-protected wall outside a Mt Eden church in ruins.

St James Church on Esplanade Rd pulled down the stone wall six months ago without Auckland City Council consent.

At the time, church session clerk Tei Kiliuyi said the church intended to rebuild the wall with the original stones and strengthen it.

But the wall is still in pieces and the ditch where it used to stand is filled with litter.

The edge of the pavement has also broken off and fallen into the ditch.

A council spokeswoman says lack of funding has slowed down the rebuilding and council is helping the church look for alternative funds.

“They do have permission to rebuild the wall, they just need to work with a council heritage specialist to help them through the process.”

She says the litter is the church’s responsibility and the council will follow up on the matter.

Auckland Presbytery clerk Trevor Mosley says the organisation is overseeing the negotiations.

“We are working through it with the council now.

“The council has it in hand.”
