Blasts around park

Central Leader - - News - By Scott Morgan

Construction work is going off with a bang in Eden Park’s south stand carpark.

About 30 underground explosives have been set off in the park along Reimers Ave in recent weeks.

The blasts have been in preparation for construction of a new 21,000-seat south stand for the 2011 Rugby World Cup.

Diggers then break through the cracked rock before phone, gas and powerlines, as well as sewage pipes, are installed or moved before the old south stand is demolished in August.

The work has left gaping holes in the ground, but Eden Park Redevelopment Board chief executive Adam Feeley is adamant it won’t stop the park operating as usual.

This included using the area as a carpark for All Blacks tests against England on Saturday and Australia in August.

Mr Feeley says he knows it’s a workable situation after attending the season’s last Super 14 game, when holes in the carpark were filled days before the match.

“I parked in the south stand carpark and was surprised it went smoothly considering what had been going on the day before.”

Reimers Ave residents say the noise level of each blast is different.

Miki Miura, who has lived on the street for three months, says a warning siren goes off before each blast. “It shakes and can be very noisy.” Ms Miura says she is more affected by the noise at the moment because she is at home during the day, but it won’t be so bad when she finds a job.

Simon Edbrooke says he doesn’t usually spend much time at home during the day, but his partner has noticed the blasts shake the windows.

He is resigned to things getting worse when the stand comes down.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re hacking away at it the night before the first world cup game.”

Fletcher Construction community liaison manager Alex Lee says more blasts might be necessary, depending on the types of rocks found.
