Carissa’s time is time well spent
While most teenagers spend their mornings sleeping in, Carissa Herbert is giving up her time for others.
The 19-year-old Auckland University student has been reading the newspaper to residents at Pt Chevalier’s Selwyn Retirement Village one morning a week for the past two months.
The Grafton resident, who is among hundreds of people celebrating Volunteering Awareness Week this week, also coached sports teams and raised money for charity during her school years in the Coromandel and Hawke’s Bay.
But she feels it’s time well spent.
“It’s time I would just spend watching TV anyway or studying.
“You just feel better about yourself and work it into your normal routine,” she says.
And Carissa, who hopes to become a doctor, always gets a good reception from the residents when she reads to them.
“They’re really chatty and like to pitch in with their own stories,” she says
Selwyn resident June Harley says they love being read to every morning.
“I like to know what’s going on. This way we get to know everything.”
Volunteer organiser Betty Harvey says they have around 160 volunteers at the village, but they’re always after more.
“They come for half a day or maybe one day.
“That’s why we need so many – they only come when they can.”
As well as reading to the residents, she says volunteers also help out with craft sessions, drive residents around the village in buggies and assist in the chapel, among other things.
Throughout the awareness week hundreds of people took part in a number of projects set up by Volunteering Auckland.
The organisation arranged groups from schools, workplaces and churches to visit community groups who required volunteers.
Volunteering Auckland regional manager Cheryll Martin says the volunteers took on all sorts of tasks, from painting, to maintenance work and taking wheelchair-bound people out on day trips.
