Two local Football Ferns have netted themselves New Zealand Universities Blues awards.

Mid-field general Priscilla Duncan and striker Zoe Thompson will be recognised on Friday at North Harbour Stadium for combining their academic achievements with sporting prowess in 2007.

The pair join 47 other athletes who picked up an award, including New Zealand team-mate Alice Tegg from Eastern Suburbs. While Thompson’s Three Kings United side had the weekend off, Duncan was helping her Western Springs colleagues extend their advantage at the top of the Northern Premier Women’s League to six points. They accounted for Glenfield Rovers 3-0 at Seddon Fields.

Jamie Hackett took full advantage of a comedy of errors to open the scoring in the 14th minute, while nine minutes later Rebecca O’Neill sent home a header to put the home side firmly in front at 2-0.

Duncan was denied a goal just before halftime when Abby Erceg fouled an opponent, but 12 minutes from time Renee Leota made the game safe with a thumping header.

Next weekend is dominated by the National Women’s Knockout Cup, with Lynn-Avon United and Eastern Suburbs going head to head at Ken Maunder Park, while Western Springs entertain Waiuku at Seddon Fields.
