Cool way to recycle fridges

Central Leader - - News -

There’s a new way to get rid of old fridges and help the environment at the same time.

A scheme from the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority and Fisher & Paykel means Aucklanders can now be paid $25 for their old fridges, and have them taken away for free.

Fisher & Paykel recycling manager George Gray says about a third of all fridges and freezers were made before new regulations phased out greenhouse gases.

Mr Gray estimates there are 450,000 old, inefficient fridges throughout the country.

“The potential to save energy and money is huge,” Mr Gray says.

Fisher & Paykel will remove old fridges in working condition, degas and recycle them.

People can choose a $25 payment or donate the money to Ronald McDonald House.
