Five-month streak ends

Central Leader - - Sport - By Scott Morgan

Gemmell says a mixture of factors contributed to the defeat.

“Harold Moody Park was like a swamp in the middle, which pulls the skill level right down.

“We suffered a few early injuries that thinned out our bench.”

However, he admits his side were outplayed by Glenora on the day.

“Glenora were more desperate than us because they’d only had one win. Everyone’s desperate to make the top four.”

Gemmell says his side will have to go into their next three matches with a “tougher mental and physical approach” – that’s if they want to qualify in one of the top two spots before the playoffs.

Meanwhile, Marist picked up their first win of the Fox competition, overcoming Northcote 24-6 at Murray Halberg Park.

And in the Sharman Cup, Bay Roskill had a close win over Ellerslie 44-38, Ponsonby lost out to Howick 24-10 and Richmond drew 18-18 with Manurewa.

On Saturday Mt Albert face Te Atatu at Fowlds Park, Marist take on Papakura at Murray Halberg Park, Richmond play Mangere East at Grey Lynn Park and Ponsonby host Bay Roskill at Victoria Park.

All matches 2.30pm.
