Fuel tax a step closer to reality

Central Leader - - News -

A regional fuel tax is one step closer to being added to petrol costs next year.

Auckland Regional Councillors endorsed a 1 cent per litre tax to be introduced from July 1, 2009.

The tax is proposed to rise to 3 cents the follow- ing year and 5 cents in 2011.

The money will help fast-track transport projects including an electric train fleet, rail and ferry station upgrades and smart ticketing.

Regional council chairman Mike Lee says the region is on the brink of modernising its public transport system.

Legislation to allow the regional tax was approved by Parliament earlier this year.

The proposal must now be approved by the finance and transport ministers.
