More people have applied for a rates rebate than at the same time last year.

More than 2400 applications have been approved by Auckland City Council for rebates to a total value of $1.237 million.

The figure is 9 percent above last year’s applications at the same time.

Ratepayers have until June 30 to apply for a rebate for the 2008 - 2009 rating year.

About 7000 people are approved for the subsidy each year, which is part-funded by the government.

Households that qualify can receive up to $530 off their rates.

Eligibility depends on income, rating level and the number of dependents in the house.

Auckland City Council tops up the government subsidy to also cover Metrowater charges.

A rebate can be credited even if you have paid your first rates instalment in full.
