Scrap metal thefts are on the rise and police are warning people to beware of thieves posing as contractors.
Senior sergeant Hirone Waretini says the problem is Auckland-wide and Housing New Zealand tenants are being particularly targeted.
He says thieves are pretending to be contractors sent to clean copper spouting.
Residents who are approached should check with their branch manager to see if the maintenance has been scheduled.
They should also take the name of the contractor and the details of their vehicle.
