Vote system stays

No changes will be introduced to the voting system for local body elections in 2010.

Auckland city councillors have decided against introducing a single transferable vote (STV) system or Maori wards.

The finance and strategy committee resolved on August 20 that it would be inappropriate to change during the ongoing Royal Commission into Auckland regional governance.

All local bodies have the option of using either STV or first-past-the-post systems.

Labour and City Vision councillors advocated for a change, arguing that STV and Maori wards would lead to more diverse representation.

A petition by 5 percent of electors can also demand a poll to change the electoral system.
