Since when has Duncan Macdonald been an expert on transport is- sues? (Spoke in wheel of cycleway, Central Leader, August 6)

He needs to get out more, and perhaps get familiar with the facts before he starts taking an axe to potentially valuable community assets.

Local councils spend millions of dollars every year on providing roads but he begrudges spending $200,000 to provide a cycleway.

Local councils around Auckland are providing cycleways to encourage people to use their bikes instead of their cars.

Councils do this because they understand that cycling is healthy, non-polluting, reduces congestion and is cheaper to provide for

It’s quite depressing to think people like Mr Macdonald are allowed to be in charge of spending our rates. MARK BRACEY
