Soaring petrol prices have helped push more Aucklanders on to public transport.
Latest figures from the Auckland Regional Council show overall public transport use up by 4.4 percent on last year.
Rail use jumped by 30 percent in June and July on the same time last year. New trains are on the way to meet the extra demand.
Bus figures are up by just under 3 percent, after remaining stagnant for several years.
Chairman Mike Lee says the growth is likely to increase as transport is made faster and more reliable.
