Gallery work imminent
More than five years of planning is finally turning into action with major work on the Auckland Art Gallery development due to start within the next two weeks.
Auckland City Council received a decision from the Environment Court last week confirming resource consent which clears the way for construction to start. The gallery has been closed since February this year, with work originally scheduled to start in April.
But opposition to the project and an Environment Court hearing have delayed the project.
The $113m redevelopment project is expected to be finished in 2010.
Auckland city mayor John Banks says this latest confirmation is a major milestone for one of the country’s largest heritage restoration projects.
“This is the decision we have been waiting for to kick start this unique project for Auckland.”
